If you are looking for a GeoGuessr alternative, the honest truth is that there is no one-to-one replacement. What you can do is find sites that scratch parts of the same itch: being dropped somewhere unfamiliar, working out where you are, and learning a little geography on the way.
The closest is MapCrunch, a button that drops you into a random spot on Google Street View, and you can keep hopping. It is a no-frills explorer rather than a scored competition, but it is good practice for your geography instincts. Globle is a daily game where you guess a country and the globe colors it by how close you are. Internet Roadtrip hands you a seat in a shared Street View car, steered by the whole crowd. Wonders of Street View curates strange things the camera car has caught.
The rest of the list is map toys: MapFight compares the size of places, The True Size Of ... lets you drag countries around, Antipodes Map shows what lies on the other side of the Earth, and Radio Garden lets you listen to the planet.
This is a short list on purpose, with 13 entries at launch. We would rather be useful than long. If you know a good one, submit it.
"Surprise me from this list" picks a map toy at random.
Drop into a random Street View location anywhere on Earth.
A shared Street View road trip steered by everyone online at once.
Funny buildings, strange costumes and other oddities caught by Google.
Drag countries around the map to see their real size.
Dig a hole and see where you would come out the other side.
Spin a 3D globe and tune into live radio from any city.
Look out of a stranger's window, anywhere in the world.
A gorgeous live globe of the world's winds, weather and ocean currents.
A world map of train tracks, signals and rail infrastructure.
See how bright the night sky is where you live.
What we mean by alternative. GeoGuessr is a commercial game with scoring, modes and accounts, and we are not affiliated with it. The sites here do not replace that experience. They are free, quick and need no signup. If you want the competitive version, look elsewhere; if you want to wander, you are in the right place.
How to play with what is here.
Beyond Street View. Flightradar24, OpenRailwayMap, earth and Light Pollution Map are on the list because they let you explore the world by looking at layers rather than streets. Flightradar24 has freemium features.
A note on loading. Street View-based sites depend on Google imagery and can feel slow on weak connections. Flightradar24 sits behind a bot wall, so our automated checks mark it as alive but unverifiable.
More. Cool Map Websites is the hub, Hidden Gems goes off-map, and Cool Websites to Visit Right Now has the showpieces. Or press the button.
MapCrunch is the closest free option: it drops you into a random Street View location so you can work out where you are. Globle is a daily geography puzzle with distance clues. Neither replicates GeoGuessr's scoring modes, but both are quick and require no signup.
MapCrunch has a button that takes you to a random spot on Google Street View, and you can keep hopping from place to place. It is a no-frills explorer, which makes it good for virtual wandering and for training your geography instincts. We check the link daily, but it relies on Google imagery.
You can join a shared road trip on Internet Roadtrip, browse oddities collected by Wonders of Street View, or wander randomly with MapCrunch. These are good for tourism by screen and for training your eye for road signs, vegetation and architecture.
Yes. Globle uses a globe and distance hints, MapFight compares sizes, and The True Size Of ... teaches projection distortion. Antipodes Map shows what lies on the opposite side of the Earth. They are short, free and work well on phones.
