MapFight lets you overlay one place on top of another to see which is bigger. Pick two places, from countries to US states to cities, and the site drops one onto the other so you can compare their outlines directly. It is quick, visual and good for settling arguments.
The real pleasure is in the surprises: places that feel enormous turn out to fit inside something else, and places you think of as small sprawl. It builds a feel for geography faster than a list of square miles ever will.
The site is the successor to an older address that now redirects here. It is quick to use and the controls are simple. We have not confirmed how well it works on mobile, so test it on your phone. Related: /site/the-true-size and /category/maps-geography.
Tips for getting the most out of it
- Pick two places you know well to calibrate your sense of size.
- Try states against countries.
- Test it on your phone first, as mobile support is unconfirmed.
