The Deep Sea

Scroll down through the ocean and meet what lives at every depth.

Your verdict:

The Deep Sea starts at the ocean surface, and all you do is scroll. Slowly the water darkens as you pass through the ocean zones, and sea creatures appear at the depths where they actually live, each with a short fact attached. Partway down you pass the wreck of the Titanic, and the trip finishes at the Challenger Deep, the deepest known point in the ocean.

The effect is oddly calming and a little unnerving at the same time. Once the light runs out, the darkness around the creatures gets properly eerie.

It is a neat piece of scroll-driven storytelling from Neal Agarwal's neal.fun collection, which dates to 2019. It takes about five minutes if you stop to read the creature facts, and it works well on a phone. Good for kids, good for anyone who has ever wondered how deep deep actually is.

Tips for getting the most out of it

  • Read the creature facts as you pass; they are the best part.
  • Turn the lights down for the darker zones.
  • It works on mobile, so scroll away on the couch.
