Your verdict:

Histography is a timeline of everything, drawn as dots. Each dot is an event pulled from Wikipedia, and together they stretch from the Big Bang to today. The page opens on a field of glowing points; scrub along the timeline at the bottom and the dots cluster and thin as eras pass.

Hover over a dot to see what it is, and click to read about it. You can also search, or filter by category. The effect is a visceral sense of how much history is crowded into recent centuries and how sparse the deep past is.

It was made by Matan Stauber. It is a beautiful way to feel the depth of time, and also a rabbit hole of its own. We have not confirmed how well it works on mobile, so a desktop is the safer bet. Related: /site/google-ngram-viewer and /category/history-time.

Tips for getting the most out of it

  • Drag the timeline slowly to see eras emerge.
  • Search for a subject to jump to it.
  • Use a desktop if you can.
